In March 2004 we visited Sea Samples on the Florida Keys for 3 weeks to collect
Ascidians.
We left Port Elizabeth at 1pm on Thursday 4 March 2004. After arrival in Johannesburg
at 2:30pm we checked in and did all the customs stuff and then waited in International
departures until our flight at 7pm to JFK New York. We had a 1am short refueling
stopover in Dakar.
We arrived in New York at 7am, after getting through customs we had to catch the
monorail to our departure terminal. The outside temperature was 4°C and we had to
walk about 500m outside, in shorts, was fun. We sat around in the restaurant area,
very tired, until our departure at 11am to Miami.
We arrived to a sunny Miami before 2pm and had to walk the whole length of Miami
airport to get to our departure terminal to catch a small plane down to Key West.
We departed just before 3pm and were in Key West by 5pm.
Of course some of Tim's luggage went missing between Miami and Key West, but it
was found and delivered to the doorstep the following day.
Karen picked us up from the airport and took us to our base for the 3 weeks and
Mote's Tropical Research Laboratory - Florida Keys.
Mote kindly provided us with a place to stay and their facilities to work up the
samples we collected each day. Don and Karen DeMaria from Sea Samples provided us
with boats, diving equipment, food and beer.
